Choosing the right pallet size might seem straightforward, but with dozens of standard and custom sizes available, it's worth understanding your options. The right pallet size can improve truck utilization, reduce product damage, and even save you money.
The Standard: 48" x 40" (GMA Pallet)
The GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet is by far the most common pallet size in North America, accounting for roughly 30% of all new pallets produced. It's the default choice for retail, grocery, and general distribution.
Why it's popular: Optimized for standard truck trailers (two pallets side by side = 96", matching trailer width), compatible with most racking systems, and widely available in both new and used markets.
Other Common Sizes
48" x 48"
Popular in the drum and barrel industry. The square footprint accommodates round containers efficiently and provides equal support in all directions.
42" x 42"
The telecommunications and paint industries favor this size. It also works well for square packaging configurations.
48" x 42"
Common in the chemical and beverage industries. Slightly wider than the standard GMA, it accommodates wider containers while maintaining good truck utilization.
40" x 40"
Used frequently in the dairy industry. The compact square footprint is efficient for smaller, heavier products.
48" x 45"
The automotive industry standard. The slightly wider dimensions accommodate automotive parts and assemblies.
How to Choose the Right Size
- Product dimensions: Start with what you're shipping. Your products should fit on the pallet without overhang.
- Truck optimization: Calculate how your chosen pallet size will fit in standard trailers (53' and 48' most common).
- Racking compatibility: Ensure your pallet size works with your existing warehouse racking.
- Industry standards: Some industries have established standard sizes. Following them simplifies exchanges and returns.
- Weight distribution: Larger pallets distribute weight over more surface area, which can be important for heavier loads.
