Used Pallets First. Always.
At Raleigh EcoPallet, we believe that the most sustainable pallet is the one that already exists. The used pallet industry diverts millions of tons of wood from landfills every year, saves forests from unnecessary harvesting, and provides businesses with reliable, cost-effective shipping solutions. That is why used pallets are the cornerstone of our inventory and the first thing we recommend to every customer who walks through our door.
The Smart Financial Choice
Used pallets cost 40-60% less than new ones. For businesses moving hundreds or thousands of pallets per month, the savings are substantial. That money stays in your pocket instead of going to lumber mills.
The Environmental Choice
Every used pallet reused is a tree that stays standing. The US consumes over 4.5 billion board feet of lumber for new pallets annually. Choosing used pallets is one of the easiest ways any business can reduce its environmental footprint.
The Reliable Choice
Contrary to what some believe, used pallets are not inferior products. A Grade A used pallet has been inspected and certified to handle the same loads as a new pallet. Many of our used pallets have only been through one or two shipping cycles.

How to Choose the Right Pallet
Choosing the right pallet depends on your application, budget, and specific requirements. Follow this simple decision guide to find the best match for your operation.
What are you shipping?
General merchandise, dry goods, building materials, and most retail products work perfectly on used wood pallets. Food, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals may require plastic or new pallets depending on regulatory requirements.
Start with used wood pallets for 90% of applications.
Where is it going?
Domestic shipping within the US rarely requires special pallet treatments. International exports typically need ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets or plastic pallets, which are exempt from phytosanitary regulations entirely.
Domestic: used wood. International: new HT or plastic.
How heavy is your load?
Standard GMA 48x40 pallets handle up to 2,500 lbs. For heavier loads, consider reinforced custom pallets or heavy-duty plastic pallets rated for 2,800 lbs or more. Our team can engineer pallets for loads exceeding 5,000 lbs.
Under 2,500 lbs: standard used. Over: custom or plastic.
Is hygiene critical?
If your operation involves food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or cleanroom environments, plastic pallets offer full washability and FDA-compliant surfaces. For less stringent hygiene needs, pallet liners on used wood pallets work well.
High hygiene: plastic. Moderate: used wood + liners.
How many do you need?
Small orders of 1 to 50 pallets are best served from our ready stock of used pallets. Large recurring orders of 500+ pallets per month benefit from custom programs with locked-in pricing and scheduled deliveries.
Any volume: we have a solution. Bulk orders save more.
Is appearance important?
For warehouse and internal use, Grade B or C used pallets are perfect. For retail displays and customer-facing applications, choose Grade A used pallets or new pallets. For branded experiences, consider custom pallets with logos.
Internal: Grade B/C. Customer-facing: Grade A or new.
Volume Discount Tiers
The more you order, the more you save. Our tiered pricing applies across all product categories, and recurring customers receive an additional discount on top of volume pricing.
Recurring Customer Bonus: Set up a monthly standing order and save an additional 10-15% on top of your volume tier. Our most active clients save thousands of dollars per year through scheduled deliveries.
Pallet Recommendations by Industry
Different industries have different pallet requirements. Here are our top recommendations based on the needs and regulations specific to each sector.
Warehousing & Distribution
High volume, cost-sensitive operations benefit most from Grade B used pallets. They are structurally sound, priced right for large quantities, and compatible with all standard racking and material handling equipment.
Food & Beverage Manufacturing
FDA and USDA regulations may require washable surfaces or virgin materials. Plastic pallets are ideal for wet processing environments, while heat-treated new wood pallets work for dry food distribution.
E-Commerce & Retail
Grade A used pallets offer a clean, professional appearance suitable for retail environments and customer-facing shipments, at a significant savings over new pallets.
International Export
International shipments require ISPM-15 compliant pallets or plastic pallets, which are exempt from phytosanitary regulations. Plastic pallets eliminate customs documentation hassles entirely.
Construction & Building
Construction sites prioritize function over appearance. Grade C used pallets provide reliable support for building materials at the lowest possible cost, and they hold up well in rough outdoor conditions.
Pharmaceutical & Medical
GMP-regulated environments demand pallets that can be fully sanitized and that leave no particles or splinters. Cleanroom-rated plastic pallets with anti-static properties are the industry standard.
"We switched from buying new pallets to Raleigh EcoPallet's Grade B used pallets last year and cut our pallet costs by 52%. The quality has been consistently excellent — we have had zero failures or complaints. Our sustainability team loves the environmental numbers too. I only wish we had made the switch sooner."

Understanding the Used Pallet Industry
A Multi-Billion Dollar Market
The pallet industry in the United States is enormous. Over 2 billion pallets are in circulation at any given time, and approximately 500 million new pallets are manufactured each year. However, the real story is in the used pallet market. Used pallets account for the majority of pallets in active service, and the used pallet industry generates billions of dollars in annual revenue while simultaneously preventing millions of tons of wood waste from entering landfills.
How Used Pallets Enter the Market
Used pallets become available when businesses receive goods on pallets and no longer need them. Distribution centers, warehouses, retail stores, and manufacturers all generate surplus pallets as a byproduct of their operations. Companies like Raleigh EcoPallet collect these pallets, inspect them, repair any damage, grade them by condition, and then resell them to businesses that need affordable, reliable shipping platforms. This circular economy approach keeps pallets in active service for as long as possible.
The Grading System
Used pallets are categorized by grade to help buyers understand exactly what they are getting. Grade A pallets are in excellent condition with no broken boards, no protruding nails, and full structural integrity. Grade B pallets may show signs of use with minor cosmetic issues but remain fully functional. Grade C pallets are economy-grade with visible wear but still capable of supporting standard loads. This grading system ensures transparency and allows businesses to choose the right balance of cost and appearance for their needs.
Why More Businesses Are Choosing Used
The shift toward used pallets is accelerating for several reasons. Rising lumber costs have made new pallets increasingly expensive. Corporate sustainability mandates are pushing businesses to reduce their environmental footprint. Consumers are demanding eco-friendly supply chains. And frankly, used pallets simply make economic sense. When a Grade A used pallet performs identically to a new pallet at a fraction of the cost, the choice becomes obvious. Raleigh EcoPallet is proud to be at the forefront of this movement in the Raleigh-Durham area.
